Physiotherapy advice online for injuries!

physiotherapistSelf manage your injury with expert physio guidance – online!

I know that at first thought this may seem ‘iffy’ or even ‘bad for you’. Things however, are not what they might seem.

A key focus with anything worthwhile in life should be on getting it right – not messing up yourself, or others. We all want to promote good health and associated practices, not hinder it.

When I came across the physical therapist website concerned I was intrigued to see how the service, which employs a number of qualified and trained Physiotherapists, approached the issue of providing quality care and services to its customers. Many sports injuries do not need hands-on treatment by a professional health care provider or Physiotherapist; instead, patients can often self-manage their recovery with the help of some expert advice.

Quality appears to be a key focus of the service and I quote: “Quality is of key importance to us, so we only employ Chartered Physiotherapists with many years experience in private practice, hospital or sports settings“.

I had a look at their list of Physiotherapists and am impressed. One works as physio for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, another with Leeds United FC – a premier English football/soccer club (don’t tell them I called it soccer). Another has worked with the Great Britain National Cycling Team. There are other noteworthy Physiotherapists – too many to mention all here. To me, they seem like an elite bunch. A good sign I think.

Self managing appropriately classified injuries online seems like a great idea to me. A key advantage is time saving. Time is such a precious resource. The organisation – Physio Bench – mentions many benefits resulting from their online program and I quote from their website:

No appointment necessary

No waiting list

Fill in the assessment anytime you want, day or night

Follow the assessment process at your own pace. We don’t put you on the spot.

No visit to a clinic or hospital needed

You will get a response within 3 working days

Save your petrol. No need for lengthy journeys to a clinic or hospital.

For business travellers, a personalised exercise plan can be taken out & performed as easily in a hotel room as at home

If you go travelling, take our address as you know we can help wherever you go.

We are a third of the cost of equivalent services provided by a “hands-on” private physio.

You get to choose a physio

We have a broader range of physios in one place than you would find in most other physio practice

You can get access to physios who are specialists in their field

No need to try and remember your exercises. We provide you with your exercise plan in pdf format, which can be printed out.

Secure process – rigorous confidential standards in line with the Health Professional Council standards of procedure

You are able to view your previous programmes of treatment

As you can see, the benefits are significant.

A benefit which, as far as I can see, they don’t mention, and which I think is very important, is this: the online Physiotherapist service will make it more likely and easier for people to ‘bother’ and get something done about their condition. Many people don’t bother to get themselves checked out, yet some of them really should. This online physiotherapist service helps reduce ‘barriers to entry’ of treatment.

Another thing (benefit) I like about this service is that it will help people who are self conscious about their bodies and who would therefore otherwise not get the help they need. You see, if an injury appears to be, (or is), non urgent or serious, then it is very easy not to bother; especially if you have issues about how you feel about the look of your body.

Looking after your body correctly is very important. Good physical health maintenance is a key foundational aspect to balanced personal development.

  1. I’m curious to see how PhysioBench works out on many levels e.g. profitability, liability, etc..

More people are using the internet to search for health information, so it makes sense for health providers to be the ones supplying it.

I think as a profession health care has been very slow to adopt technology. This appears to be someone out there exploring uncharted waters.

If you hear more news please post. Thanks.

    Thanks for your comment.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how things go with PhysioBench. I expect they will do very well – they clearly have top talent on board, their website is very well presented with a high ‘usability’ rating (Don’t Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, 2nd Edition), and in my view their service is a perfect fit for the modern dynamic; particularly among the younger generation.

You might also be interested in contacting or networking with this US Doctor – he is very leading edge as far as combining modern methods with medical practice. The Doctor has no office; many consultations are by e-mail, video chat or IM; and apparently he only treats residents between the ages of 18 and 39, preferably in Williamsburg. For all face-to-face visits, 31-year-old Dr Parkinson travels to a patient’s home or work.

  3. Thank first for a great article. Made us feel real good!

Our idea came from questioning UK’s National Health Service Direct service – where physios give advice to patients on the phone.
This puts patients on the spot and the quality of advice has turned out to be pretty poor as a result.

I’m not the physio – I’m the business side and could see the internet model working on B2C & B2B sides in many areas.

As for the liability, Yes, good question – we debated this at length. But we only use Chartered physio who are covered by PI so in effect are just another physio practice, just happen to not be hands on. And how are we different to NHS Direct?

I compare what we do to when the first company came up with the concept of e-learning. Nowadays its commonplace – I learned French over the internet from someone based in Israel! But back then, imagine the sucking of teeth…

By the way, if you’re interested, I’ll add a page with all the various articles published about physiobench. Our key aim this year is, unsurprisingly, to gain credibility!

Thanks for the further information Martyn.

Yes, I recall the “sucking of teeth” era personally. I met my wife online in the 90’s – back then there was a stigma about online dating and scaremongering about the type of people you might meet. Fortunately I am still alive and she is gorgeous inside and out!

During that period (online dating)I had a Californian girlfriend at one point and used what was, back then in the 90’s,the ’strange contraption’ called the internet phone – VOIP. All in all, quite a lot of people considered me ‘odd’ due to my uptake of modern methods.

Personally I like working on the ‘frontier’ of new developments and trends, and am reminded that throughout recorded history the majority of mankind has an unbroken record of being incorrect about most things, particularly important things. For some time people thought the earth was flat and later they thought the sun, stars, and planets traveled around the Earth. Both ideas are now considered ridiculous, but at the time they were believed and defended by the vast majority of adherents.

In time, I have no doubt that online physiotherapy will be commonplace, however you and your organization will be seen as pioneers.
